This week’s Artsy Wednesday theme is Animation Inspired. Oh lordy, the possibilities! I bounced between dozens of ideas before finally deciding on one of my favourite and earliest childhood cartoons – Sailor Moon.
When I was a kid, I’d wake up at around 6am to watch my favourite shows on Cheez TV – Sailor Moon and Pokemon were the usuals, and they added Digimon at a later stage. Although my mum was against cartoons (every minute spent watching cartoons is a minute not spent practicing the violin), she approved of Sailor Moon, so my childhood was filled with all sorts of Sailor Moon themed paraphernalia. I’m pretty sure the show also had something to do with me growing my hair down to my waist and wearing it in pigtails all the time.
For those who are unfamiliar with the Sailor Scouts, I’ll do a quick runthrough of the characters in the picture above from left to right – Sailor Venus, Sailor Jupiter, Sailor Mars, Sailor Moon, and Sailor Mercury. They draw their powers from the elements of their respective planets. Their planetary symbols appear on their foreheads when their powers are awakened, and on their magical items.
I chose to use these symbols to represent the Sailor Scouts in this skittle-type design, rather than actually try to draw the characters, which would have ended in disaster. As I only had four nails to do this design on (I don’t like to include my thumb), I had to cut out Sailor Venus. No-one likes her anyway, she’s just a Sailor Moon wannabe.
